Books Are Orange Pilling Devices

Discover how fiction is helping orange pill the world with Philip Charter, creator of 21 Futures — a Bitcoin-focused anthology project blending storytelling, freedom, and financial sovereignty.

In a new episode of The Bitcoin Libertarian, we had the pleasure of speaking with Philip Charter — a history graduate, advertising professional, traveler, English teacher, fiction writer, and now a full-time Bitcoin-focused coach and content creator. Philip shared with us his unique journey into Bitcoin, his passion for storytelling, and how he is using fiction to spread the ideals of freedom, privacy, and financial sovereignty.

Orange Pilled by Literature

Philip’s Bitcoin story began not with a dramatic market event but through the gentle influence of a client. While coaching professional writers, Philip met Nico Laamanen, CEO of Consensus Network, a publisher specializing in Bitcoin literature. Nico shared PDF versions of foundational Bitcoin books, fueling Philip’s curiosity. As he dove deeper into these texts, he transitioned from mild curiosity to total conviction, ultimately going "all-in" by focusing his coaching and writing exclusively on Bitcoin clients by 2024.

Philip’s rapid journey through the Bitcoin rabbit hole wasn’t just technical; it was deeply philosophical. Coming from a creative background rather than a financial or technological one, he highlighted how Bitcoin can appeal across disciplines—especially through emotive mediums like storytelling.

Why Fiction is a Powerful Orange Pill

Philip passionately advocates for fiction as a powerful tool to spread Bitcoin ideas. Unlike technical whitepapers or complex economic treatises, fiction creates emotional connections. It sparks curiosity and builds empathy. Through storytelling, non-technical readers can imagine futures shaped by Bitcoin without needing to first understand blockchains, cryptography, or monetary policy.

Referencing literary giants like Ray Bradbury and Jorge Luis Borges, Philip noted that fiction often plants seeds of revolutionary thinking. Just as 1984 or Fahrenheit 451 influenced society’s views on censorship and totalitarianism, Bitcoin-themed fiction can challenge readers to rethink money, freedom, and human rights.

The Birth of 21 Futures

Philip’s most ambitious project so far is 21 Futures, a Bitcoin and freedom-focused fiction anthology series published in collaboration with Consensus Network. The first volume, Tales from the Timechain, was launched in late 2023 and features over 21 speculative short stories exploring how Bitcoin and financial freedom might shape our world.

Building on the success of the first volume, the second anthology, Financial Fallout, is on its way. This time, the theme broadens into general financial dystopias—showing the devastating consequences of failed fiat systems while subtly introducing readers to Bitcoin as a solution.

Beyond anthologies, 21 Futures is expanding into:

  • Audiobooks

  • Video content and trailers

  • A vibrant writing community

  • Merchandise

  • Support for Bitcoin fiction writers looking to publish

Writers from all backgrounds are welcome to submit their work. Submissions are reviewed seriously, and the team responds within — fittingly — 21 days.

A Future of Bitcoin Fiction (and Beyond)

Philip believes Bitcoin fiction is experiencing a renaissance. With prominent Bitcoiners like Saifedean Ammous and Lyn Alden venturing into fiction writing, and mainstream novelists incorporating Bitcoin into thrillers, a new genre is being born. However, he predicts Bitcoin fiction will eventually phase out. As Bitcoin becomes fully integrated into society, it will be as ordinary as today's internet or electricity—no longer requiring special mention.

Philip’s View on Bitcoin’s Future

Philip's vision of Bitcoin’s future is not rooted in price speculation. Instead, he sees Bitcoin as humanity's chance for healing and building a freer, more sustainable society. He believes Bitcoin’s principles of proof-of-work, individual sovereignty, and sound money will help correct the distortions created by today's fiat systems, though the transition will involve pain, patience, and perseverance.

In his own words, the future will be smaller, slower, but much better.”

Conclusion

Philip Charter embodies the idea that Bitcoin is for everyone — not just coders, investors, or economists. By using storytelling, he brings Bitcoin’s philosophy to life in ways anyone can connect with emotionally. His work with 21 Futures is building a literary movement that could orange pill millions, one reader at a time.

If you're a writer with a Bitcoin story to tell, or simply a reader looking to be inspired, keep your eyes on 21 Futures. Fiction might just be the most powerful orange-pilling device yet.
